Population by Sex in Lexington County

 

According to Census 2000, the population in Lexington County was 48.6 percent male and 51.4 percent female. In South Carolina, the population was 48.6 percent male and 51.4 percent female.

 

The male-female ratio in Lexington County in 2000 was 94.5. South Carolina had a male-female ratio of 94.5 in 2000. This was lower than the national male-female ratio (96.3) as well as that for the South (95.9).

 

Changes in Male and Female Population 1990-2000

In contrast with national trends, the male population in Lexington County grew more slowly than the female population between 1990 and 2000. This resulted in the male-female ratio decreasing from 95 in 1990 to 94.5 in 2000. The male-female ratio has increased on the national level since 1980 when male death rates began to decline faster than female death rates and immigration brought more men into the country.

Sex by Age

In 2000, there were more older women than older men in Lexington County. There were 13,097 women aged 65 and over, as compared to only 8,892 men. In contrast, there were 28,744 males under age 18 while there were 27,569 females. This trend is in keeping with national and statewide trends. In the United States in 2000, there were 20.6 million women over 65, as compared to 14.4 million men. Under age 18, there were 37.1 million males and 35.2 million females. Nationally, the balance shifted towards more women at age 36.
