The Town of South Congaree is located just southeast of the Columbia Metropolitan Airport on Hwy 302. It was incorporated on June 11, 1957 with less than 1,000 residents. Today South Congaree is a growing town of approximately 2,500 residents. South Congaree has an active council form of government that provides zoning regulations, building permits and a 24-hour police department.

The town in 1916 was first known as Camp Styx, home to the 2nd S.C. Infantry. The state of South Carolina bought 1007 acres from Pickens C. Price in 1913 for $12,000.00 to establish the camp.

Today, South Congaree is part of the Columbia metropolitan area and is one of the fastest growing residential areas in the region.
